Social Development leaves youth out in the cold
No camp for the youth

Thousands of youths from all over the country have been left high and dry after the Social Development Department allegedly failed to secure a venue for a youth camp, which was supposed to take place at Richards Bay in Kwazulu-Natal.

Youths were told at the last minute that the Minister was not going to show up. Departmental spokesperson Lumka Oliphant says they were informed by a security company that it was risky to accommodate so many youths at the camp.

Youth spokesperson Thami Majola says thousands had to be sent text messages and others received phone calls to inform them that the camp has been cancelled. Majola adds: “As leaders we are saying we don't accept that because it shows they failed us. They are also misusing funds because they are planning so much and at the end of the day nothing came out of it.”

In another development, the junior mayor of the City of Cape Town has encouraged young people to finish their studies, saying it is their ticket out of poverty. Thandokazi Sineke was speaking at the Youth Indaba in Cape Town, attended by about 300 young people.

Young people complained of rampant drug and alcohol abuse, teenage pregnancies and poverty within their communities. Sineke says most young people are not motivated despite government and private businesses pumping money into motivational programmes targeting them.
