New York's Kaia Wine Bar Hosts Event to Benefit South African Charity

Phelophepa charity benefits

What if sipping wine in New York City could make a difference across the world and land you a trip to Africa? That’s Kaia Wine Bar’s goal with their Phelophepa Charity Benefit on August 29th. The wine bar, located in Manhattan, has partnered with the South African Charity, Phelophepa, to raise funds and promote awareness about the organization’s cause. Unique to Kaia, the bar is owned and operated by Suzaan Hauptfleisch, a local New Yorker originally from South Africa, who is looking to make a difference in her hometown.

“This charity is near and dear to my heart because they bring hope, empowerment and health equity to the poor in the rural communities of South Africa,” said Hauptfleisch. “Kaia truly represents South African culture, it is in our roots from our history, to our wines, to our menu selections, to our name that translates to 'home' from the Zulu word 'eKhaya'. This really is a great way to link my new home with my old home in a way that will make a difference. This benefit although small in New York City, will leave a very large impact on many South African rural communities.”

For those unfamiliar, Kaia Wine Bar is a local South African themed wine bar that serves locally sourced seasonal South African inspired small plates, local meats and cheese, craft beer and Southern Hemisphere New World wines with a focus on South Africa.

On the other end of the equation, Phelophepa (meaning train of hope) is a volunteer organization that that delivers much-needed medical supplies and bio-medical services to rural communities in South Africa. The eighteen-car train travels throughout the area to deliver cataract surgeries and reading glasses, and also provides comprehensive optometry, dental and psychological care. In addition, the organization also provides outreach programs to children, including HIV/AIDS education. Through the use of South Africa’s rail system, Phelophepa brings these services to those who desperately need it, and ensures their health after the train departs.

The Kaia Wine Bar Phelophepa Charity Benefit on August 29th is the perfect opportunity to be a part of the movement. The bar is located at: 1614 3rd Avenue, New York, NY 10128. Tickets are $100 (approximately R1024) a piece and proceeds will be donated to Phelophepa. Along with admission, ticket-holders will enjoy a custom all-you-can-eat menu by Kaia’s very own Chef Ivan Giani, and all-you-can-drink South African wine.

The benefit will begin at 6pm, and included within the ticket price are 10 raffle ticket entries into the drawing for a chance to win a first class flight and trip to South Africa. Winners of the raffle will visit the Train of Hope to witness their work, as well as experience the beautiful country. A complete trip itinerary can be found at https://trainofhope.org/campaign-first-prize/. Additional raffle tickets can be purchased at the event.

Tickets are extremely limited for this event and can be purchased by contacting Suzaan Hauptfleisch at [email protected]
